Foster Program

This program asks volunteers to care for animals not yet available for adoption due to age, illness or injury.  Too often an animal comes in the shelter abandoned by the mother and unweaned.  Sometimes the animal is weaned, but still needs to gain a few ounces before we can put it up for adoption.

We also have special needs pets who arrive injured, sick or handicapped in need of post-surgical attention.

And sometimes, our pets get depressed and just need a break from being kenneled.

Our Foster Care Program determines the animals and sends them home with volunteers for specialized attention.  These pets will stay with a foster volunteer for 2-6 weeks to take advantage of a more focused and less stressful environment.  Foster Volunteers are responsible for their pet's care, feeding, medicating, socializing and general tender loving care.

Once a foster pet has been given medical clearance by our veterinarian and released for adoption, the foster parent will have the option of returning him or her to the shelter or participating in our Mobile Adoption Program to find their foster pet a permanent and loving home.

If you have pets of your own, HSTC requires that they are current on all vaccinations. Completion of an application specific to Foster Care and a brief interview is required of prospective foster parents.  Although we do ask you to provide food bowls, litter pans, bedding and toys for your foster pet, the shelter will assist if needed.  (Every donation, no matter how small, helps us do more for the animals).
