Stuart, Fla./March 12, 2014 — Watching dogs of all breeds and sizes sprint down the race track at the seventh annual Mutt Derby prompts plenty of smiles and laughter and it’s all for a worthy cause: To raise funds for the shelter animals at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC). Organized by The Fur Seasons and presented by Seacoast National Bank, the event highlight is watching the dogs race toward their owners. The Mutt Derby will take place 8:15 a.m.-noon, Sat., March 29, at The Fur Seasons, a luxury dog and cat boarding facility and pet resort, 1310 SW Commerce Way, in Stuart. Admission is free.
For a $10 donation, pet owners can register their dogs now by going online to http://www.thefurseasonsresort.com. Pre-registration is preferred. On site registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 10 a.m. on event day. All breeds and sizes may compete and the races are grouped by weight. Each Derby entrant receives a certificate for participating and winners will receive prize ribbons. In its first six years, the event has raised more than $46,000. Last year, the event raised $11,500 for the HSTC.
A new event attraction this year is Lisa Shaw, an animal communications specialist and Reiki practitioner who will meet with guests so they may learn more about their dog. Another new addition is Carol Adams, a disabled American veteran and an award-winning athlete in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games. She will be on hand with her service dog, Roker, and will talk about how service dogs are trained and the kind of work they do. The event also includes a silent auction, a substantial raffle prize, pet education sessions, a dive/swim event and pet-related vendors. The HSTC will bring adoptable pets for people to meet and a DJ provides music.
For the past five years, John Moschitta, Jr. — credited in “The Guinness Book of World Records” as the World’s Fastest Talker — has called the races and presented the winners with their ribbons. He returns again this year, bringing his sense of humor and fundraising skills as well as his dedication to the welfare of animals. Proceeds from the races, the raffle and the silent auction benefit the HSTC.
In addition to presenting sponsor Seacoast National Bank and print media sponsor Seabreeze Publications, Miller’s Ale House Restaurants, Nozzle Nolen, Petco, Hills/Science Diet, AceK9.com, Golf USA, Handyman Matters, Main Street Media 360 also are sponsoring the event.
