The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) is now an official United Way affiliated agency. United Way's goal is to advance the common good and create lasting changes in Martin County by addressing the underlying causes of community problems.
“The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast meets all of the United Way standards of affiliation,” said Jim Vojcsik, United Way of Martin County’s executive director. “The organization has formed successful partnerships with other agencies to offer programs that benefit children, adults and the elderly in our community.”
HSTC President and CEO Frank Valente said, “Our humane education program was the key to being accepted. The impact it has on students and seniors differentiates us from other strictly animal related organizations.”
The HSTC also has just been awarded a Character Counts mini-grant from the United Way of Martin County. Volunteers and their certified pet therapy dogs will begin a pilot program at Palm City Elementary this spring for second grade students. They will use the dogs to emphasize the six pillars of Character Counts: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
The HSTC’s humane education programs also include Misty’s Pals, a group of volunteers with trained pet therapy dogs who visit an average of 450 residents a month at assisted living and full care nursing communities; Lessons in Kindness, educational programs that are provided annually for approximately 2,000 students in Martin County public schools, private schools, with scout troops and Boys and Girls clubs; Pawsitive Interaction, which provides a therapeutic approach to bring animals and students with physical and cognitive disabilities together; shelter tours for students, which include a classroom component featuring certified therapy pets; and Paws to Read, a weekly literacy program that provides more than 2,000 half-hour reading sessions at various locations.
“We are asking our supporters to support the United Way, and if you are a United Way supporter, please remember our humane society,” said Valente.
