Rescue Program

The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast is the only open admission shelter in the county. Because of this, we find ourselves with animals of every size, breed, age, and temperament. Even with the best resources available, not every animal is suitable for adoption in a shelter environment. A shelter can be very stressful for some animals and as a result they may act out and may pose a threat to shelter staff and the animals we care for. For some, the behavior they show at the shelter does not necessarily correlate to the behavior they have once they are in a home or environment outside of our setting.

These animals are placed on a “Pending Rescue Placement” list and HSTC staff immediately reaches out to pre-approved 501(c)(3) rescues asking for them to accept the pet(s). The time frame to get the pet out of this environment is vital for the animal’s success at rehabilitation. Most animals will continue to deteriorate the longer they remain at our facility. Even with our best efforts (enrichment, training, etc.) most animals that are selected for this program do not change their behavior in a shelter setting.

It is a requirement that all animals be spayed/neutered and vetted prior to being posted for rescue. All animals are transferred to approved rescue partners at no charge and come altered, vaccinated and microchipped.

If you are a 501(c)(3) rescue group and are interested in partnering with HSTC to save more lives, please contact our Rescue Coordinator, Emily Recco at erecco@hstc1.org or 772-600-3220.
