Humane Society seeks volunteers for new thrift store near Jensen Beach

Stuart, Fla. — The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) is looking for volunteers who wish do donate their time, talents and energy to its second thrift store. This new thrift store is in Stuart but close to the border of Jensen Beach, 1099 NW 21st Street, north of the Roosevelt Bridge on the west side of US 1.
“Our existing thrift store, which is further south on US 1 in Stuart, has been so popular that another store is being added so we can help the shelter animals even more,” said HSTC Thrift Store Manager Terry Picciolo.
The new store is expected to open at the end of April.
“The shelter and thrift stores rely heavily on the dedication and compassion of its volunteers to operate our business,” said HSTC Volunteer Coordinator Bitsy McKay.
The volunteer jobs include processing and pricing donated items, managing the retail floor, running the cash register and caring for on-site adoption pets. The store will be open seven days a week Mon.-Thurs. from 10

Skin Serenity Spa Sponsors Humane Society’s Senior Adoption program

Palm City, Fla. — Skin Serenity Spa has found a perfect match with the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC). The new skin care center is a new sponsor of the HSTC’s Seniors for Seniors Adoption Program. Under this program, the adoption fee is waived for all senior adopters (60 and older) who adopt a senior pet (seven years and older). All senior adopters who adopt a pet younger than seven years will receive $25 off the adoption fee of a cat and $50 off the adoption fee of a dog.
Skin Serenity Spa has committed to underwriting $1,000 worth of adoptions in 2012.
"Seniors and pets are very dear to us," said owner Candace "Candy" Lopes. "Our sponsorship will help seniors to adopt pets."

Humane Society of the Treasure Coast enters next phase of development with groundbreaking

Palm City, Fla. — Over the past 55 years, the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) has prepared thousands of animals of different breeds and temperaments for adoption. Some come in healthy while others arrive injured or present with symptoms that require treatment. That’s why the HSTC’s next chapter is such a necessary, major advance — the building of a brand new isolation ward and the renovation of a portion of its Palm City shelter for a cutting-edge surgical suite. Last week, construction began under the management of Kirchman Construction. Local architects Kelly and Kelly developed the project’s plans.
“There are no time constraints on hope,” said HSTC President & CEO Frank Valente.
“Our foster program can only handle so many sick animals. The next logical step in the growth of our organization is to create a dedicated isolation ward to treat sick animals and a state-of-the-art surgical suite for high volume spaying and neutering.”...
Head on over to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast just before the 4th of July to take advantage of an Independence Day adoption special. From July 1-3 and July 5-8, all adoptions will be reduced to the patriotic price of just $17.76. The normal dog adoption fee is $100; cats, $40; and critters range from $5 to $40.
Dog, cat and critter adoptions are available at the HSTC shelter, 4100 SW Leighton Farm Ave., in Palm City. Cats also may be adopted at the HSTC Thrift Store, 2585 SE Federal Highway, Stuart, and starting July 5, also at the HSTC’s Thrift Store North, 1099 NW 21st St., Stuart (this location is closed on Sun. and Mon.).
One special dog named Ed — who has only three paws — is hoping to get adopted soon. The three-year-old pit bull terrier mix is about 40 pounds.

Bargain hunters, take note! The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast — already known for having some of the best deals in town at its Thrift Store off of U.S. 1 in Stuart — is opening its second thrift store with a grand opening Christmas in July celebration from July 12-14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thrift Store North is located in Stuart but close to the border of Jensen Beach, 1099 NW 21st Street, just north of the Roosevelt Bridge on the west side of US 1. The event is sponsored by Eventmakers International. At the same time, a celebration will be taking place at the Stuart store, 2585 SE Federal Highway.

Stuart, Fla./July 30, 2012 — Pet owners can get a jump start on the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast’s 10th annual Mutt March, presented by the Petco Foundation. Pre-registration begins on Aug. 23 at Mulligan’s Beach House Bar & Grill in downtown Stuart, 61 W. Osceola St., and Jensen Beach, 2019 Jensen Beach Blvd., from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Adult registration for the Mutt March is $10; children 15 and under are free and include a limited edition T-Shirt and a coupon book to local participating businesses. Mulligan’s will donate 10 percent of that night’s proceeds to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC), so organizers are encouraging the whole family to come out and enjoy dinner and activities. Kids 12 and under may dress as a dog or a cat and they’ll eat for free (with the purchase of an entrée and a children’s beverage). Children’s activities include interacting with Spongedog, balloons, face painting, crafts and toys.
The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) will begin a new event series for dogs and their owners called Sips & Wags on Aug. 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Pirate’s Cove Waterfront Tiki Bar, 4307 SE Bayview St., Stuart. The event will be held the second Tues. of every month through Dec. 2012. Admission is $10 per person and includes two free drinks and a 20 percent discount off on the food menu. All proceeds benefit the HSTC.
"Sips & Wags is the only Treasure Coast doggie social that benefits animals in need," said HSTC Community Relations Manager Jackie Ranaldo. "We invite the public to lap up an evening with their two-legged and four-legged friends while enjoying live music, dining and shopping at the waterfront Pirate Tiki Bar while taking in the picturesque view of Manatee Pocket in Port Salerno."
Put on your dancing shoes to support the shelter animals! The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast and Fred Astaire Dance Studio are partnering on a new event, Dancing for the Paws, which will feature salsa, ballroom, tango and swing dance lessons and culminate in an exhibition dance show.
All of the classes will be held at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio at 2147 SE Federal Highway in Stuart. The salsa dance lesson will be Sept. 13; ballroom dance lesson, Sept. 27; tango dance lesson, Oct. 11; and the swing dance lesson, Oct. 25. These lessons will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The grand finale ball and exhibition show is slated for Nov. 8 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Individual dance classes are $15 per person and the finale show is $30 per person.
Cuddle up with your four-legged best friend during Doggie Date Night at the Lyric's Flagler Center and settle in for some laughs. Presented by the Lyric Theatre and the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, the event will be held on Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. and will include dinner and the hysterical cult-classic, canine comedy, “Best In Show.” The cost is $25.
If your date … er, dog … gets restless, not to worry. He can mingle with other tail waggers in the complimentary doggie lounge, hosted by The Fur Seasons Resort for Pets, while you enjoy the movie. Your pooch won’t go hungry either, thanks to Paws Over Tradition - A Dog Bakery. They’re providing doggie bags.
Dinner will be served 30 minutes prior to each screening. Doors will close promptly at 5 p.m. for the early screening and 8 p.m. for the late screening. Seating is limited and reservations are highly recommended.

Humane Society to celebrate Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month with new promotion

The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) is giving individuals and families an extra incentive to adopt an animal that has been housed at its Palm City shelter for more than six months. For the entire month of October, which is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, the adoption fees for long-term pet residents (dogs and cats) will be waived. The shelter is located at 4100 SW Leighton Farm Ave. in Palm City.
“We do not have any time limits on animals that are in our adoption program,” said HSTC Operations Manager Candice Veach. “As a result, some of our dogs have been here for more than a year. That also includes cats, so we decided to include them in this promotion. Our dedicated team of staff and volunteers work tirelessly day after day providing top quality care for our shelter animals, but the truth is that no matter how long the animals are here, they really need a place to call home.”
