Four-legged and two-legged friends march in support of shelter animals at Humane Society of the Treasure Coast’s Mutt March
Stuart, Fla. — The rains held off and the sun shone brightly as more than a thousand two-legged and four-legged supporters of the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) participated in the 11th annual Mutt March, which benefits the nonprofit organization’s shelter animals. So far, the Mutt March has generated more than $37,000 and donations continue to be accepted as part of this event. Eve Samples from The Stuart News, philanthropist Elizabeth Lahti and Lori DesRuisseaux, one of the Mutt March founders, judged the costume contest. They selected Best of Show, Jill Kidd, her mother, Alice Yelenic, and their dogs, Lola and Bridgette; Most Unique, Linda Motz and her dog, Bob; Funniest, Lisa Barrett and her dog, Daniel; and Cutest, Katelin Drugas with Jackson.
The top fundraising team was Humane Education’s Misty’s Pals Pack followed by Martin Memorial’s, The Animals, and Martin County High School’s DECA Marketing Club, which also had many volunteers participating at the event. The top individual fundraisers were Milena Gifford with Barkin’ Bones Bakery followed by Kay Warder and Teri McLean.
All of the costume contest winners and top fundraising prize package items were generously donated by Victoria Rose, The Evergreen Club, Rare Earth Gallery, Esthetics by Kamilla, Duffy’s, Tootsies, Bubbles Auto Wash, Yoga Fish, Royal Treatment Salon, Stuart Coffee Co., Kilwin’s, Ivy Salon & Spa, Shakra’s Deli, The Fur Seasons, The Jewelry Joint, Bark Park, Gumbo Limbo, The Gafford, Tutto Italiano, Mulligan’s, Dee Dee Beaupre of Blown Away Salon, Skin Serenity Spa and J. McLaughlin.
In the Big Money Mutt March Raffle, Bob Maggi was the big winner of the $1000 American Express gift card. Carl Siegel won the $500 American Express gift card and Donna Meyerson won the $250 American Express gift card.
In addition to the walk around the park, guests enjoyed a free pancake breakfast by IHOP, Mutt Derby races by the Fur Seasons, Rabbit Run lure coursing, a “flea-less” vendor market and a JC Penney Life Touch Portraits photo booth. There also were horses for adoption, courtesy of Florida TRAC, and there also was a mini horse for kids to pet. The other new activity at this year’s event was the AKC Responsible Dog Ownership area, which included the humane education department’s recognition of the children’s art contest, Canine Good Citizen testing and obedience demonstrations.
