PALM CITY- The Humane Soceity of the Treasure Coast loves its supporting businesses and community partners. One business in particular even came up with its own idea of how it could help get pets adopted.
Jody and Joyce Hanner of Engine World Lawn Equipment in Palm City are close neighbors to the main shelter and had already been supporting the shelter with donated pet items and sponsoring adoptions but wanted to do more.
The Hanners have four dogs of their own that come to work with them Monday through Friday. They have their dog beds in the back office and spend their days snoozing and interacting with customers. The Engine World patrons became so familiar with seeing the dogs in the shop that they expressed disappointment that there were no dogs there on Saturdays.
A light bulb moment went off for Jody and Joyce and they approached Sarah Fisher, the Humane Society’s mobile adoption manager, about having one featured shelter dog come out to the shop on Saturday mornings to meet customers and perhaps find a forever home.
Sarah readily agreed and the program was launched a few weeks ago. Sometimes other community events will preclude attendance by a shelter pup and volunteer but adoptable dogs can be found at Engine World from 9 to 11 a.m. on most Saturdays.
This is a great example of how a simple idea can blossom into a way to support the mission of the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, which is to assure a better life for companion animals by providing shelter, finding loving homes and promoting respect for their place in our lives.
