For the second year in a row, the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) has achieved the coveted 4-star rating for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency from Charity Navigator, America's premier and largest independent charity evaluator. The 4-star rating is the highest rating possible. Using an unbiased, objective, numbers-based rating system, Charity Navigator helps guide intelligent giving by evaluating the financial health and accountability and transparency of roughly 5,500 mid-to-large sized charities that garner roughly 50 percent of all private contributions made in the USA each year (not including houses of worship).

In a letter written by Michael Thatcher, Charity Navigator’s president & CEO, he stated, “Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that your organization adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way.”

He went on to say that only 21 percent of the charities rated by Charity Navigator have received at least two consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast outperforms most other charities in America. This exceptional designation from Charity Navigator differentiates the HSTC from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.

“We are proud of the fact that we have been rated 4 stars six out of the last eight years, and never below 3 stars,” said HSTC President and CEO Frank Valente. “As for fiscal transparency, we have always been rated 4 stars, which means our donors can trust that we are using their contributions wisely to help the shelter animals.”

Charity Navigator reviews 17 governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, providing information on its website for each of the charities it evaluates. The nonprofit organization accepts no advertising or donations from the organizations it evaluates, ensuring unbiased evaluations, nor does it charge the public for this trusted data.
