The Humane Society of the Treasure is looking for animal lovers to bring joy to their shelter pets by fostering one or more of them this holiday season. Known as its “Home for the Holidays” program, pick up begins on Tues., Dec. 20, from its shelter, 4100 SW Leighton Farm Ave., Palm City, or its Stuart-based thrift stores, 2585 SE Federal Highway and 1099 NW 21st St.
The HSTC’s goal is to get every single animal at its shelter placed in a foster home as part of this annual program. Individuals must complete the appropriate foster paperwork and requirements before taking a pet home. Starting at 10 a.m., Dec. 20,approved foster families may come to the shelter and choose an animal in the adoption area. The animals must be picked up no later than 2 p.m., Sat., Dec. 24. The foster parents, or “guardian angels,” will be encouraged to help the HSTC find a permanent home for their foster pet. All animals need to be adopted or returned back to the shelter by Wed., Jan. 4, 2016.
The HSTC prefers that participants provide food bowls, bedding and toys for their foster pet, but the shelter will assist if needed. Through last year’s program, the HSTC fostered 25 animals and 10 were adopted. To view the pets currently available for adoption, go online to http://www.hstc1.org.
For those who are ready to adopt an animal, the HSTC is offering a generous discount during the entire month of December as part of the national animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society’s “Bring Joy” annual animal adoption campaign. All dog and cat adoptions will be reduced to $25 (normally $125 for dogs and 45 for cats). Adoptions for animals over 7 years old are free.
