Palm City, Fla. — Head on over to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast just before the 4th of July to take advantage of an Independence Day adoption special. From July 1-3 and July 5-8, all adoptions will be reduced to the patriotic price of just $17.76. The normal dog adoption fee is $100; cats, $40; and critters range from $5 to $40.

Dog, cat and critter adoptions are available at the HSTC shelter, 4100 SW Leighton Farm Ave., in Palm City. Cats also may be adopted at the HSTC Thrift Store, 2585 SE Federal Highway, Stuart, and starting July 5, also at the HSTC’s Thrift Store North, 1099 NW 21st St., Stuart (this location is closed on Sun. and Mon.).

One special dog named Ed — who has only three paws — is hoping to get adopted soon. The three-year-old pit bull terrier mix is about 40 pounds.

“Ed came to our shelter as a stray in April and has been here ever since,” said HSTC Operations Manager Candice Veach. “He is super friendly and seems to be housebroken. He was born with only three paws.”

Each adoption includes sterilization (spay or neuter), an overall wellness check, age-appropriate vaccinations including rabies, first de-worming of hookworms and roundworms, microchip and registration, heartworm test for dogs, feline leukemia test for cats, a bath/dip, free 30 days of Pet Health Inc. pet insurance, one bag of Hill's Science Diet pet food and $30 off one HSTC dog obedience class.
