As with so many of our fellow concerned animal lovers in our community, our hearts go out to the people and animals in Houston and the surrounding communities devastated by Hurricane Harvey. The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast has offered our services, and we have been in touch daily with appropriate parties to monitor relief efforts. We are waiting to hear from the professional relief specialists on the ground as to how we can best be of assistance.
We have also reached out to our rescue partners both locally and nationally to make sure that everyone is aware we are here to help.
Reuniting animals with their families will be the primary goal of all relief efforts in the affected communities. There were many lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina and other disaster relief efforts in the years since. If there are abandoned or stray animals that may need to be relocated, we are available to provide care. We want to support responsible and ethical plans to provide care for any animals in need in the region.
In the meanwhile, we are helping to spread the word on how to best support and send resources and donations to those in need. Here is a list of the shelters and animal rescues currently asking for donations. This way your support will go directly to local organizations and you can provide them with what they actually need.
As the pet-friendly disaster shelter for Martin County, we are acutely aware of what it takes to prepare for and recover from natural disasters. We want to assure our supporters that we take our local responsibility seriously during this hurricane season, while also supporting responsible, organized and professional disaster relief missions anywhere in the country.
